The Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal offers scholarships to help students achieve their academic goals. From CEGEP to graduate studies, these programs provide financial support and encouragement, empowering students to pursue their passions and contribute to the community. Every year, thanks to the incredible generosity of many donors, the JCF offers scholarships to students interested in a wide range of academic pursuits. These scholarships are available for CEGEP, undergraduate, graduate, and other studies across various disciplines.

For fiscal year 2025, the JCF awarded a total of $718,000 in scholarships to deserving students. This funding has enabled 157 students to pursue their educational dreams, covering tuition fees, books, and other essential expenses.

    Brenda Gewurz Scholarship for Feminist Leadership

    Awarded to a woman from Montreal who is pursuing her masters or PhD studies at any university, who has demonstrated leadership or shown a keen interest in developing leadership qualities, especially around women’s issues. Applicants are welcome in all fields of study. However, preference will be given to candidates in Gender Studies or Jewish Studies. Scholarship may be used towards tuition or other expenses related to the area of study (i.e. conferences).

    Awarded to a student enrolled in graduate studies related to physical rehabilitation & research, with preference given to research related to spinal cord injuries. Local and Israeli students are accepted who study in Canada or Israel.

    Jenny Panitch Beckow Memorial Scholarship Canada

    Applicant must be a motivated Israeli student who is entering into or is currently enrolled in a Canadian university in a graduate program in any of the following fields: language, literature, culture, Jewish Studies, art or music; or in any medical field, scientific or industrial endeavor or research. All applicants are to list the financial assistance which they are already receiving for the forthcoming academic year. When Ruth Beckow started to think about her will and her philanthropic dreams, one priority stood out: to honour the memory of her mother, Jenny Panitch who, she says, encapsulated the spirit and soul of Raoul Wallenberg and others who helped save Jews during the Holocaust. “My mother would have wanted some recognition of their bravery,” says Ruth. “She was truly a kindred spirit, so sadly dismayed by this tragedy.” She decided to create a scholarship program that creates bridges and understanding by offering the opportunity to experience life in the other’s country while studying, to promote mutual friendship and linking of our people. Applicants are required to describe other scholarships and financial assistance to which they are entitled during the period of studies under question.

    Given annually and based on need and academic merit, the Musia and Leon Schwartz Scholarship will go to one or more graduate students involved in the humanities with a focus on intolerance, antisemitism and historical events affecting Jews, such as the Holocaust, and the consequences.

    Student Engagement Scholarship

    Open to full-time students from Concordia University, McGill University, University of Montreal, and HEC who are in good academic standing and who will serve as leaders on campus. Awardees must be committed to working collaboratively with various student groups to promote dialogue, mutual understanding, celebrate diversity and work towards creating a safe and healthy campus climate, free of intimidation, discrimination, antisemitism and all expressions of prejudice and hate. Students must demonstrate financial need in their Personal Statement.

    Solly Urman Memorial Scholarship for Study in Israel

    The Solly Urman Memorial Scholarship is for a Montreal graduate of high school or Cegep who seeks to deepen his or her knowledge of Judaism and Israel by spending a gap year in Israel at a religious Zionist oriented school or university. The scholarship is based on need, scholastic excellence and community involvement. The scholarship was founded to perpetuate the values of Solly Urman z’l’, who was a passionate Jew and a strong Zionist, who devoted much time to his community supporting young people. In his capacity as treasurer of the Canadian Zionist organization, he facilitated scholarships for study in Israel, which was a matter very close to his heart.

    Miriam and E. Michael Berger Fellowship

    Awarded annually by the School to a graduate student whose area of practice or research is in the field of community organization and/or social policy and who demonstrates academic competence and financial need.

  • McGill Jewish Studies

    Blacher and Glasrot Families Memorial Award for Holocaust Research

    Established in 2000 by Mr. and Mrs. Josef Glasrot, survivors of the Holocaust and residents of Montreal. An award of $1000 to be presented annually to a student at Mcgill University for excellence in research in Holocaust and related studies, and particularly on the history of the ghettos of Warsaw and Kovno (Kaunas). The award will be made on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies, and presented at an annual public ceremony during the Closing Exercises of the Department of Jewish Studies.

  • McGill Jewish Studies

    Rosa and David z"l Finestone Scholarship

    Established in 2014 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. Awarded annually to a student excelling in the study of the Hebrew language.

  • McGill Law

    Arnold Fradkin Memorial Scholarship

    Established in 2013 by the late Freda Fradkin in honour of her nephew, Arnold Fradkin, B.C.L. 1968, for students in the Faculty of Law with a demonstrated interest in Human Rights Law. Awarded by the Scholarships and Student Aid Office in consultation with the Faculty of Law on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated financial need. Value varies.

  • Congregation Beth Tikvah Ahavat Shalom Nusach Hoari

    Yehoshua (Jason) Friedberg Memorial Scholarship

    The objective of this scholarship is to allow students in Montreal to study in Israel in a Hesder type Yeshiva/Seminary. In order to be eligible the applicant must be enrolled in a Yeshiva Hesder type program which combines Torah study and service to the State of Israel. This philosophy reflects the ideals of Yehoshua Friedberg Z”L who was killed by PLO terrorists outside of Jerusalem. Yehoshua was a soldier and student whose life reflected the ideal balance of the two realities. The men and women who continue this ideal help to perpetuate his special memory. Applications for scholarship consideration for the upcoming academic year are now being accepted. The criteria requires registration in a Hesder oriented education facility for at least one year. Accompanying documents must include personal background, current academic affiliation, as well as: a letter of recommendation from the school you are now attending, an acceptance letter from the school in Israel, and a copy of your ticket to Israel when it is purchased.     Nira Friedman Creative Dance Project will be given to a student who develops a creative dance project at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

  • McGill Jewish Studies

    Jack Gitlitz Memorial Scholarship

    Established in 2011 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. Two scholarships awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students who are residents of Quebec. Awarded for excellence in Jewish Studies on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies.

  • McGill Jewish Studies

    Micki and Norman Keesal Scholarship

    Established in 2011 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. One scholarship awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing studies in the Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University. Awarded based on need and merit on recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies.

  • McGill Jewish Studies

    Henriette and Marcel Korner Scholarship

    Established in 2013 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. Awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate Jewish Studies student on the recommendation of the Department.

  • McGill School of Social Work - Entrance Fellowships

    Henry Oelberg Memorial Award

    Created in memory of lifelong Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal colleague and friend, Henry Oelberg. Awarded to a graduate student in the School of Social Work based on academic merit. Preference will be given to a student with a focus on community organization.

  • Study in Israel

    The Shirley & Sam Rabinovitch Piano Scholarship

    Scholarship to students of The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (JAMD) of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . For students who participate in the JAMD Community Service Program.

    Hella Ram Scholarship to Develop Music Program for Children with Special Needs

    Hella Ram. for whom this scholarship is named, was a person who dedicated her life to the happiness of others. She was both a gifted teacher of High School Math Students and a very talented pianist who inspired everyone with her love of music. She sang to her children and grandchildren and to her husband with whom she shared a great love for 55 years and she took special pleasure in sharing her favorite musical pieces with all her friends, It is therefore fitting that this scholarship will be given to someone who is finding ways to help children with special needs through music.

  • Azrieli Schools

    Nathan Schachter z"l Merit Scholarship

    The Nathan Schachter z”l Family Merit Scholarship is an annual award which is to be presented during the school’s annual Chai Award Ceremony. Each year six ((one per grade per school, Secondary Two, Three and Four, for a total of six awards each year) deserving students who best meet the guidelines and parameters of the award will earn the award. Upon the return in August, all students who earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all General studies classes combined and who earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all Judaic studies classes combined will be eligible to receive The Nathan Schachter z”l Family Merit Scholarship. One week prior to the start of school, scholarship recipients will be notified and their tuition for the year adjusted. The Chai Award Ceremony takes place in the fall and all prizes, awards and certificates are based on results of the year just completed. The Nathan Schachter z”l Family Merit Scholarship recipients will be recognized at this ceremony and will receive a certificate along with a monetary gift. Criteria: • Award recipients must be returning to Azrieli Schools for the following school year • Award recipients must have earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all Judaic studies classes combined. • Award recipients must have earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all General studies classes combined and must maintain this average throughout the current year.• Eligible students must consistently exhibit positive school leadership. • Eligible students must have the most robust co curricular and extra curricular profile, including participation in a cross section of school activities, such as sports, student government, the arts, the sciences and Judaic activities. (SLAM) • Award recipients will receive a monetary prize ($180) in addition to the scholarship.

  • McGill Jewish Studies

    Dr. Oskar and Sally Schickler Scholarship for Jewish Studies

    Established by the late Dr. Oskar Schickler in 2008 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal, this scholarship is a testament to the Schicklers’ lifelong commitment to creating educational opportunities to students of all ages. Awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies.

  • Concordia Department of English

    Ruth and David Steinberg MA Scholarship in Creative Writing

    Inspired by Concordia University Associate Professor Kate Sterns and Professor Jill Didur, this Scholarship was established to assist students pursuing their academic and creative passions for Creative Writing. The MA Scholarship shall be granted through competition, based on academic merit, to newly admitted full-time students to the Creative Writing Master’s program at the University. The recipients shall be selected by the Graduate Program Committee (GPC) in the Department of English which will then submit the name of the selected nominee to the School of Graduate Studies. The School of Graduate Studies will administer the MA Scholarship. Applicants may be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or international students. The MA Scholarship in Creative Writing is not renewable.

  • Concordia Department of English

    Ruth and David Steinberg PhD Scholarship in English Literature

    Manny Weiner Research Award

    Established by Mr. Manny Weiner. Awarded by the School of Social Work to a graduate student who is concentrating their studies in the field of social policy.

  • Concordia Jewish Studies

    Frances & Isaac Zlotowski & Krisha Zlotowska Starker Fund

    Grant towards a doctoral or postdoctoral study of European Jewry. Special preference will be given to research and/or publications dedicated to Jewish History and culture during the first half of the XXth century and the history of Jewish women. Applicants must be citizens of Canada or the United States.

  • The support that the Jewish Community Foundation has given me has allowed me to dedicate all my efforts towards my studies leading to my acceptance into the program of my dreams. I am extremely grateful to the JCF for recognizing the academic excellence, community involvement and leadership activities of fellow students. Many JCF clients designate their funds to further the education of young people in our community. We administer dozens of scholarship funds for all levels of study, from undergraduate to specialized and postgraduate, and from Holocaust studies to education and medicine.
