Every year, thanks to the incredible generosity of many donors, the JCF offers scholarships to students interested in a wide range of academic pursuits. These scholarships are available for CEGEP, undergraduate, graduate, and other studies across various disciplines.

For fiscal year 2024, the JCF awarded a total of $483,000 in scholarships to deserving students. This funding has enabled 157 students to pursue their educational dreams, covering tuition fees, books, and other essential expenses.

We firmly believe that investing in education is not only an investment in the future of individual students but in a brighter future for all.

    This scholarship is awarded to a Montreal based student who wishes to study at an approved university in Israel.

  • Yehoshua (Jason) Friedberg Memorial Scholarship

    The objective of this scholarship is to allow students in Montreal to study in Israel in a Hesder type Yeshiva/Seminary. In order to be eligible the applicant must be enrolled in a Yeshiva Hesder type program which combines Torah study and service to the State of Israel. This philosophy reflects the ideals of Yehoshua Friedberg Z”L who was killed by PLO terrorists outside of Jerusalem. Yehoshua was a soldier and student whose life reflected the ideal balance of the two realities. The men and women who continue this ideal help to perpetuate his special memory. Applications for scholarship consideration for the upcoming academic year are now being accepted. The criteria requires registration in a Hesder oriented education facility for at least one year. Accompanying documents must include personal background, current academic affiliation, as well as: a letter of recommendation from the school you are now attending, an acceptance letter from the school in Israel, and a copy of your ticket to Israel when it is purchased.     For graduate study or research for a qualified and interested Canadian student who is entering into or is currently enrolled in a program of graduate studies at an Israeli university; fields of study: language, literature, culture, art or music; or in any field of medical, scientific or industrial endeavor or research. All applicants are to list the financial assistance which they are already receiving for the forthcoming academic year.

  • Hella Ram Scholarship to Develop Music Program for Children with Special Needs

    Hella Ram, for whom this scholarship is named, was a person who dedicated her life to the happiness of others. She was both a gifted teacher of High School Math Students and a very talented pianist who inspired everyone with her love of music. She sang to her children and grandchildren and to her husband with whom she shared a great love for 55 years and she took special pleasure in sharing her favorite musical pieces with all her friends,  It is therefore fitting that this scholarship will be given to someone who is finding ways to help children with special needs through music.

    A year of study in Israel is an incredible opportunity; it is a year where you can focus your commitment and love for Torah and Eretz Yisrael. Mizrachi Canada understands that your dedication to these values for a full year ultimately strengthens our community. Those who decide to make the step towards Aliya to Israel are the Mizrachi community’s investment in the State of Israel and become our emissaries there, while those who return to Toronto return with a stronger sense of mission and understanding of the ideals that our community holds dear – Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael and Torat Yisrael. It is therefore paramount for Mizrachi Canada to help support our students taking part in programs, Yeshivot and Midrashot that instill these ideals.     Solly Urman Memorial Scholarship for Study in Israel

    The Solly Urman Memorial Scholarship is for a Montreal graduate of high school or Cegep who seeks to deepen his or her knowledge of Judaism and Israel by spending a gap year in Israel at a religious Zionist oriented school or university. The scholarship is based on need, scholastic excellence and community involvement. The scholarship was founded to perpetuate the values of Solly Urman, z’l’ who was a passionate Jew and a strong Zionist, who devoted much time to his community supporting young people. In his capacity as treasurer of the Canadian Zionist organization, he facilitated scholarships for study in Israel, which was a matter very close to his heart.

    Blacher and Glasrot Families Memorial Award for Holocaust Research

    Established in 2000 by Mr. and Mrs. Josef Glasrot, survivors of the Holocaust and residents of Montreal. An award of $1000 to be presented annually to a student at Mcgill University for excellence in research in Holocaust and related studies, and particularly on the history of the ghettos of Warsaw and Kovno (Kaunas). The award will be made on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies, and presented at an annual public ceremony during the Closing Exercises of the Department of Jewish Studies.

    Arnold Fradkin Memorial Scholarship

    Established in 2013 by the late Freda Fradkin in honour of her nephew, Arnold Fradkin, B.C.L. 1968, for students in the Faculty of Law with a demonstrated interest in Human Rights Law. Awarded by the Scholarships and Student Aid Office in consultation with the Faculty of Law on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated financial need. Value varies.

    Sadie Polatshek Memorial Award in Jewish Studies

    Established in 2002 in honour and in memory of Mrs. Sadie Polatshek by members of her family. Awarded annually to an outstanding student who is pursuing an academic program in the Department of Jewish Studies. There will be special preference for a student planning a career in Jewish Education. Administered by the Montreal Jewish Community Foundation, the Sadie Polatshek Memorial Award will be conferred, beginning in June, 2003, upon the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies in consultation with the Scholarships Committee of the Department of Jewish Studies.

    Nathan Schachter z"l Merit Scholarship

    The Nathan Schachter z”l Family Merit Scholarship is an annual award which is to be presented during the school’s annual Chai Award Ceremony. Each year six ((one per grade per school, Secondary Two, Three and Four, for a total of six awards each year) deserving students who best meet the guidelines and parameters of the award will earn the award. Upon the return in August, all students who earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all General studies classes combined and who earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all Judaic studies classes combined will be eligible to receive The Nathan Schachter z”l Family Merit Scholarship. One week prior to the start of school, scholarship recipients will be notified and their tuition for the year adjusted. The Chai Award Ceremony takes place in the fall and all prizes, awards and certificates are based on results of the year just completed. The Nathan Schachter z”l Family Merit Scholarship recipients will be recognized at this ceremony and will receive a certificate along with a monetary gift. Criteria: • Award recipients must be returning to Azrieli Schools for the following school year • Award recipients must have earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all Judaic studies classes combined. • Award recipients must have earned a minimum overall average of 85% in all General studies classes combined and must maintain this average throughout the current year.• Eligible students must consistently exhibit positive school leadership. • Eligible students must have the most robust co curricular and extra curricular profile, including participation in a cross section of school activities, such as sports, student government, the arts, the sciences and Judaic activities. (SLAM) • Award recipients will receive a monetary prize ($180) in addition to the scholarship.

Awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies.

    Inspired by Concordia University Associate Professor Kate Sterns and Professor Jill Didur, this Scholarship was established to assist students pursuing their academic and creative passions for Creative Writing. The MA Scholarship shall be granted through competition, based on academic merit, to newly admitted full-time students to the Creative Writing Master’s program at the University. The recipients shall be selected by the Graduate Program Committee (GPC) in the Department of English which will then submit the name of the selected nominee to the School of Graduate Studies. The School of Graduate Studies will administer the MA Scholarship. Applicants may be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or international students. The MA Scholarship in Creative Writing is not renewable.

    Frances & Isaac Zlotowski & Krisha Zlotowska Starker Fund

    Grant towards a doctoral or postdoctoral study of European Jewry. Special preference will be given to research and/or publications dedicated to Jewish History and culture during the first half of the XXth century and the history of Jewish women. Applicants must be citizens of Canada or the United States.

  • The support that the Jewish Community Foundation has given me has allowed me to dedicate all my efforts towards my studies leading to my acceptance into the program of my dreams.
