About the Honoree

Karen Elizabeth Latt was an outstanding student, a talented athlete, and a very caring person. She earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology with an emphasis in neurobiology in May of 1993 from the University of California, Berkeley. She excelled both in and out of the classroom because of her exceptional work ethic.  She raced for the Cal Cycling Team, was awarded Most Valuable Player on the Nordic Ski Team, worked at the U.C. Child Care Center, gave campus tours for the Visitor Center, and still made the Dean’s List; she was a model student – athlete.  She was accepted into the Class of 1997 at Tuft’s Medical School, with plans of becoming a cardiologist.  Following her accidental death in July of 1993, this scholarship was established in her memory by her family and friends.

Scholarship Description

The KEL memorial scholarship at the JCF seeks to support the training of exceptional female student-athletes like Karen. This scholarship is open to female students who have recently graduated, or will be graduating, with an undergraduate degree and have been accepted for admission to medical school. The ideal candidate for this scholarship will have demonstrated excellence in both scholarship and athletics, been involved as a leader in their community, and have demonstrated financial need.

Requirements:

  • Completed application form
  • Letter stating goals; reasons for request and involvement in extra curricular activities and athletics
  • Letter of acceptance to medical school for the coming academic year
  • Transcripts
  • 2 letters of recommendation from professors

The amount of the award shall be flexible and dependent upon available funds.
